Ever wonder why people bring Pine trees into their houses at the Winter Solstice, placing brightly colored (Red and White) packages under their boughs as gifts to show their love for each other? It is because underneath the Pine bough is the exact location where one would find this ‘most sacred’ substance, the Amanita muscaria, in the wild. Christmas was actually derived from the shamanistic traditions of the tribal peoples of pre-Christian Northern Europe. The shamans of the Siberian peoples would gather mushrooms from under sacred trees where they appeared, then fill their sacks and return home. They climbed down the chimney-entrances and shared the mushroom gifts with those within. Santa also dresses like a mushroom gatherer.

Much of what you wrote was news to me, but I grew up hearing many of the issues tangential to the subject - I also appreciate how you presented these big ideas without the polemics that is usually involved.
And I especially like that I've had a personal mystery solved - these magic mushrooms also are the homes of the popular Smurfs cartoon from the 80's! There was plausible deniability before (I suppose) because the shape of the larger ones are not the same, but those little ones in the picture you provided are the exact model of the home the smurfs live in.
